Abstract:

Thirty three letters (101 pages), 2 original 3-cent postage envelopes with Wells, Fargo & Co. logo postmarked from Sacramento and San Francisco addressed to Mrs. William Maltman, Nevada City, Calif, and 1 drawing of a cemetery enclosure by Chauncey Ford for the burial site of William Maltman. Most of the letters are from the gold miner Maltman to his wife Slatira (addressed as Tira in the letters) describing his experiences as a miner in various mining towns in California and Nevada and expressions of love and longing. One letter dated July 20, 1856 refers to news of the Great Fire of 1856 in Nevada City, Calif. Other letters to his wife are from friends of Maltman who provide some details of his death in an mining accident explosion in 1870, his funeral, and offers of condolences. One letter written by Slatira Maltman in the collection is addressed to a friend of William. One letter to Mrs. Maltman is on Meadow Valley Mining Company stationery. Another letter to Mrs. Maltman offering her a position at the San Francisco Mint is on letterhead of the "Office of the Assistant Treasurer U.S." Includes one letter and unsigned pencil drawing on brown paper by Chauncey Ford for a proposed masonry enclosure of Mr. Maltman's grave site
